Back in 2018 my father proposed me to pass new year’s eve in the Reunion island. At this period it is the summer season. Compared to the continent the contrast is totally surprizing, because you can celebrate new year on the beach with a 30°C temperature outside !
We had to opportunity to be welcomed by a reunionese family (friend of us) who took us to a complete tour of their island ! We were sleeping in Saint Denis, the biggest city of the island.
Let’s start the visit.
First step: get familiar with the winding roads 🙂 The city of Saint-Denis is surrounded by mountains and we started visiting the island from its heights. You can stop on the mountains canons of Saint-Denis. From this point of view you can have a nice panoramic view.
Barachois is the name of the sea front in Saint-Denis. If you want to enjoy a walk while having a breath taking view to the ocean, that is the place to go. Along the walls you will find a lot of old and rusty canons, symbol of the ancient city defenses. When the afternoon starts to end, more people will be present, joggers and people chilling under the palm trees.
All accross the Reunion Island you will see a small yellow fellow. This is actually the french artist Jace who is painting it everywhere. Some gouzous can also be found in Paris. You can learn more on Wikipedia and on the Gouzou description.
One of the coolest place in the city of Saint-Denis is located around the cathedral. This monument is a bit higher than its surrounding streets. In the area you will find many bars and restaurants, which makes this place one of the most frequented place downtown. There you will enjoy for sure a good mojito ! But if I have one place to recommend you, it is the the Cafe Edouard, it has a very nice terrasse giving you an amazing view on the cathedral.
After having fully visited the city of Saint-Denis, we decided to start discovering the country side of the Reunion Island. It is known that the east side of the island if completely different from the west side. Actually that is because the east gives directly to the ocean. It recieve more clouds and more rain, thus the vegetation is more developped.
If you have one thing to try and smell in the Reunion island is vanilla. You will find a lot of street markets selling you vanilla from the Madagascar, but try some from the vanilla plantation of Sainte Suzanne (La vanilleraie). The sell very good quality products there. And the smell… is divine.
Our last experience in the Reunion island was a sea trip on a catamaran. My father wanted that I can see a sunset on a boat. So we bought our tickets for a trip of three hours over the ocean.
The captain told us that maybe we could see dolphins, but sadly it was not the case. Anyway the spectacle given by the sunset I was about to see made me completely forget about dolphins…The sky was cloudy and was just perfect for this moment. I still have this in memory. I will never forget it.
You want to know which boat compagny we chosed ? It was the Grand Bleu (https://www.grandbleu.re/). They are very professionnal, the captain was super kind and explains everything you want to know. Especially if you don’t know anything about sailing !
