Helsinki is a very nice city to visit. I went there for a workshop a few years ago and I discovered a great place for a weekend city trip, especially during summer. My boss allowed me to stay a few more days, so I can visit it. Without any hesitation, with my camera in the bag, I walked around in the streets of Helsinki and enjoyed a very peaceful city.
So I propose you to see the post edition of an image of Heslinki.
Love hops and live the dream
The original image
This photo is a good example of a complicated image to edit. I took this photo in Helsinki. I loved the way the red neon was reflected in the glass. It took me a few tries to get the correct focus on the neon text. I had to use the manual focus.
However I did not pay attention to the white reflection of the street at the bottom of the glass. It confuses a bit the reader and take too much importance in the image.
As often in photography, the colors of the image may not be strong enough. The global light is very bright here. Which is good is a way, because it gives a particular feeling about the picture. You understand quite easily that it is an image superposition.
After post editing
Okay, what can be done here to improve this photo ?
My first idea was to transform it into a picture that you can see in a movie. It is very interesting, because photography and cinema are very close. Secdonly, I think that the global color need to be warmer, because the we see a large wall and with many windows.
Next idea, which is a classic, is to turn the image in black and white, while keeping only one color. Here the red. Obviously to make the neon very important in the whole picture. This way it catches our eye instantly.
Last idea, surfing on the dramatic style that the image can bring. Actually, you can easily imagine this scene on a very rainy day. This is what I tried to achieve here. Make you feel a bit melancholy.
How to do it ? I use a lot of blue by adding color layers to this image in Lightroom. Then I drastically increase the level of details. And finally I give more importance to the black or dark tones.
