A few years ago I was walking at Deauville and enjoying a hot summer. This place is famous for all the beach cabins that are proudly carrying the most known celebrities of the world.
The place is also famous because of the American Movie Festival and the colorful beach umbrellas, which make this place such a typical location.
But today I won’t post yet another photo of these umbrellas. No, today I will show you the “behind the scene”, along the “Rue de la mer”.
As usual, let’s start with the original photograph, without post editing. After what you will discover three proposals and edits.
Edit #1 – The classic Black and white
One of the first idea that directly came to my mind is to turn the photo in black and white. It sounds logical as the columns and the shadows are perfect for this kind of editing. There was nothing really extreme to do here, except about paying a close attention to the shadows.
It is important to make the shadows a bit darker. This will remove any disturbing detail in the background, behind the men. They are the main subjets in this photo. So we need to remove the distraction and help your eyes to focus on the 4 sitting guys.
Edit #2: Improve the light of the scene
The second idea that I had while editing this photo is to add more light. We are in summer, the sun light is quite bright and intense. But the place’s atmosphere can be improved. Actually we can add a small touch of vintage. This particular building in Deauville has an appearance that reminds me of old swimming pools. That could be a good thing to try here.
We just have to increase the global light and the shadows. The “yellowish” color of the concrete needs also to be soften and the blue in the sky need to turn a bit into a more cyan color.
Edit #3: Lomography
The last editing is a continuity of the previous one. Let’s force the vintage aspect of the photo. We can try to insist on the colors instead of softenning them.
Do you remember the old cameras and the old pictures of your parents around the 80’s ? The yellow colors can easily turn into a more orange tone. And the black areas being really strong.
Yep that’s it, here is the result !
